Mike & LenoreThe Lionshare crew gathered to wish Cassie Herman and Kim Miller good luck as they start new chapters in their careers. Cassie has accepted the head trainer position at nearby Fairfield County Hunt Club, which she is especially excited about, as it will still allow her to train with Peter. After seven years on the east coast, Kim is returning home to her family in Chicago. Her summer plans include riding her horse Bentley, catching up on much needed sleep and riding her horse Bentley. Did we mention that part already?
On a chilly Tuesday night the Lionshare team comprised of staff and customers, met for one last night with old friends and the first night of many with new ones. It was also at this party that we welcomed Lenore Brown as the new Barn Manager. She brings a lifetime of experience to her role of barn manager at Lionshare Farm. "We're thrilled to have Lenore as part of the Lionshare family," said Peter as he toasted all three women.
The party ended all too soon as trainers and riders alike had to prepare for Garden State Horse Show, Old Salem I and II, Devon and HITS.
Peter Leone Tops $25,000 Suncast 1.50m Classic with
Select at the FTI Winter Equestrian FestivalPeter Leone and his newest mount, Select, scored their first victory together just two weeks into their partnership. On March 14th Leone bested a field of 45 entries in the $25,000 Suncast 1.50m Classic at the 2010 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida. Select, a 10 year-old KWPN gelding, is owned by Lionshare Farm and Ger Poels Horses. In a class filled with top-quality horse and rider combinations, there were eight clear trips over the Leopoldo Palacios designed course. "Leopoldo really hit it right on. The time allowed was tight, but not inappropriately tight. My focus was to keep my horse's concentration in place by the end of the course," Leone said.
Leone and Select were efficient through the turns, and Select made an excellent effort in a hard turn back to the double combination. They galloped down the last line with the crowd whistling and yelling and finished in 39.614 seconds for the win.Of his supportive spectators, Leone said with a smile, "I knew that they were friends. When the whistling was loud from two to three, I stayed within my plan. In the turn back to the double, my horse tried very hard and turned himself inside out there. That was a very hard turn. Down the last two fences, I heard the whistling again, and I complied with it!"
This win was just the first of several recent top placings that have put Peter and his string of excellent horses back in the spotlight.
Peter Leone Shines in Return to $200,000 Gene Mische American Invitational
Tampa, Florida - April 10, 2010- Under the bright lights of a night class, Peter Leone returned to the $200,000 Gene Mische American Invitational for the first time in ten years. His patience was rewarded with a second place finish aboard Select, a 10 year-old KWPN gelding owned by Ger Poels Horses and Lionshare Farm. Leone piloted his mount around an impressive track in Tampas famous Raymond James Stadium, home of the 2009 Super Bowl.
Steve Stephens, the long-time course designer for the this prestigious event, came up with a track that yielded only three clear rounds from a starting field of twenty-five. He employed three double combinations including a tough oxer to oxer affair, and the final double, three jumps further down the road at #9ab, was constructed of Liverpool oxer to Liverpool vertical.
Leone and Select showed no signs that this was only their fourth grand prix together. Riding late in the order, Leone and his mount easily navigated the course, producing the last of the three clear first rounds. However, he would have to wait for his shot at the win as the jump-off was delayed when the nearby Yankees game ended with a huge fireworks display. Unphased by the commotion, Leone and Select gave a valiant effort and broke the times just half a second behind the class winner. Im thrilled with this horse, Leone said after the class. He has huge scope and gives 100% all of the time.
