Ken Whelihan - Like many seasoned riders, Ken started his career riding for a sale barn. In the early 1980’s Ken spent four years riding literally hundreds of horses for Barney Ward’s Castle Hill. After Castle Hill Ken worked for top horseman including D.P.Lenehan, his son Brian, Anthony D’Ambrosio, Aaron Vale and Andrea King. Ken’s first winning grand prix horse was a horse he purchased as a two year old and brought along to jump the international jumping derby in Newport. With the help of George Morris, “Skip With Me” went on to win ribbons in the Grand Prix classes at Wellington. He later was a top amateur jumper for Ellen Van Dyke. Ken has produced nearly a dozen horses to the grand prix level including his mount for the 1992 Olympic selection trials, “Ballybay Lucky Again”.

Ken’s riding background includes working Lane’s End race horses in Camden,SC, foxhunting with the Old Chatham and Moore County hunts and winning horse trials. No stranger to championships in the hunter ring, Ken produced the top working horse “Tanglewood”, but his passion lies in the jumper ring. Ken has been a USEF judge in hunters and equitation since 1991. His students have placed in regional and national equitation finals as well as earning jumper championships from Lake Placid to West Palm.

Courtney McKay - Equestrians with an eye on the winning juniors of the last decade would be familiar with Coutney McKay. Courtney trained throughout her junior career with Bob Braswell and Christina Schlusemeyer of Ocala, Florida. Her wins in the hunters include Grand Champion USEF junior hunter finals aboard Onyx, Grand National junior hunter champion with Movado and even large pony champion at the Washington International show with Matisse. In addition to winning on the hunter side of the horse show, Courtney was a dominant force in the equitation ring. Her many wins include being ranked number one in the national computer rankings for the Bates equitation trophy, Best equitation rider at the Capital Challenge, winner of the Monarch International championships. Courtney finished in the top four in the WIHS, USET, ASPCA and Ronnie Mutch finals. At the National Horse show Courtney was chosen for the Wayne Carrol Sportsmanship award. Following an amazing junior career Courtney went on to ride sale horses for Jay Golding and Laura and Bob Kraut. It was while with Laura and Bob that Courtney made her debut in the Grand Prix ring. Courtney brings to Lionshare obvious ability from the saddle as well as a strong work ethic and a productive and appealing approach to teaching.
